Hotel minimalism

Here's where I'm waking up this morning. It's a hotel room at Charles de Gaulle airport, north of Paris. By the way, I took these pictures a year ago, when I made exactly the same trip.

The hotel is part of the French Ibis [ee-BEESS] chain. The rooms are clean and comfortable, but the style is minimalist at best. The room is costing me a little less than 75 euros for the night. It's all very convenient.

In a couple of hours, I'll be in the air, winging my way to Charlotte in North Carolina. I'll arrive the same day, mid-afternoon, after eight hours on the plane.

  1. The hotel room was pretty hot yesterday afternoon and the AC unit seems to be turned off -- not even the fan works. But the room cooled down by late evening and I got a decent night's sleep. It's pretty quiet when you consider the steady stream of big passenger jets landing right outside my window.

  2. Walking distance, or free airport shuttle to CDG? I once had a horrible time getting to a nearish hotel that turned out to be in an industrial park. They had no shuttle and taxis wouldn't go there. I was told to take the train with my piles of luggage.

  3. Hey, good price for the hotel, and the convenience is important when you have a flight to catch. Lee I, what a mess that must have been for you!

We stayed at an airport hotel just across the parking lot from Newark airport (N.J., USA) once, because we had a 6:30 a.m. flight home the next day-- sure appreciated the free shuttle that morning.

Bon voyage! You must be in the air, well on your way, at this point (about 13h15 France time).

  4. I really like that hotel, which I consider to be truly "21st century." It's just a few steps from the train station at the airport, which is also the place to board the intra-airport subway. No more than 5 minutes from either Terminal 1 or Terminal 2.

    Welcome home, Ken!

  9. Welcome to your native land, Ken. Here in NoVa, the snow has vanished during the night, as expected. Temperatures are supposed to be in the mid sixties today; so it should be a little warmer in Morehead City. Enjoy your stay and best regards to your Mother.

  12. Bienvenue aux Etats-Unis, Ken! Or is that Rebienvenue...?

My friend who won't be going to France until late September will possibly be staying at either CDG when he arrives in the early evening or going directly into Paris. Was your IBIS the budget hotel in Roissy? Did you or anyone else have difficulty waiting for the navette to the hotel? My daughter said the navette didn't go to the budget hotels as frequently as the more expensive ones. He would be interested in anyone's suggestions for Paris hotels as well. Budget, moderate-ish choices, please.

Also---I remember there was one of those cheap restaurants near the hotel??? (I was last there in 2004) Any suggestions ? Anyone?

    1. Hi Mary,
If your friend is looking for a hotel in Paris I can recommend this one. It's next to where I live when in France and all the people I sent there where very happy. Be sure to book early and request rooms on the patio. There are all kinds of restaurants around, but remember, budget and cheap are not Parisian words! LOL

    2. Mary, the Ibis hotel I stayed in is not the Ibis Budget at Roissy Nord, which you have to take a navette or bus to get to. The Ibis I was in is right on the airport people-mover line and it takes only five or ten minutes to get to either airport terminal (fast and easy). The hotel is also right next to the RER station where you can take the train into central Paris. I don't think "my" Ibis costs much more than the Budget Ibis but rates do change seasonally or depending on big events like trade shows or conventions going on near the airport. It's always better to book as far in advance as possible.

I've stayed at the Hotel Lecourbe before and agree with CHM's recommendation. I also like the Hotel des Carmes and the Hotel du College de France in the Latin Quarter.

    3. Merci beaucoup, chm and Ken! I remember you talking about the Hotel du College de France, Ken, on another trip, but I hadn't written the information down. I've passed the information on to my friend, Jacques (french name from french class!).
Your explanation for budge/cheap is well taken, chm! This will be Jacques' first time in Paris, and I have warned him about the high costs.
